CHRISTMAS IN QUEENSFERRY 2010Dear Trader/Resident It seems to be generally accepted in the community that the work progressed by the Christmas in Queensferry Committee during 2009 in procuring new Christmas lights and organising the switching on event was successful in delivering these two key objectives. We realise that you might not have given Christmas 2010 a thought yet, however if we are to hold a successful event then the residents of Queensferry need to start planning now. The same group is willing to organise this year’s event, but do need additional help with fund raising activities, support particularly on the day of the event and organising group events. What is required is continued community support and ideas to enhance the event. The committee is keen to continue to get greater community involvement from, individuals, businesses and local groups and seeks to have good representation at our AGM which is planned for:
Date: 31st March 2010Venue: Rosebery HallTime: 7pmIf you would like to get involved, or represent a group that is involved or should be involved or if you have a comment to make about the Christmas Lighting or how the event is run or can be improved then we would be pleased to hear your views. Alternatively if you cannot attend and wish to comment then please log onto our website www.christmasinqueensferry.org Kind Regards from,The Christmas in Queensferry Committee.

You might have heard through the grape vine that there is a proposal to close the Registry Office in South Queensferry. It will severely affect allot of businesses in the village. If you would like to oppose the proposal please use the below template and fill in the appropriate gaps eg. your name, address, email & telephone number and then send it to Norman Work at the address below as he is looking for as much support as possible to keep the office open. Petition :toNorman Work -CouncillorCity of Edinburgh CouncilI have heard that a proposal is being put forward by an official in the City of Edinburgh Council to close the Registry for Birth, Deaths and Marriages at South Queensferry Burgh offices. Closure would mean that no marriages could take place. Closure of this public facility will mean that locals will have to travel into Edinburgh for all registration. South Queensferry in particular is very popular for marriages especially in the summer months, this will also have a knock on effect for local businesses who do get business from many of the marriage ceremonies, be it taxi's, wedding receptions & meals, hairdressing etc. For example weddings at Dundas Castle, Hawes Inn , Orocco Pier etc - the papers would have to be completed and picked up in Edinburgh, an extra inconvenience. I strongly oppose any proposals to close the Registration Office in South Queensferry for the following reasons: -

Dear Trader/Resident The present Christmas in Queensferry committee represents over forty local groups who attended the AGM and gave the committee the remit and objective to look at an alternative lighting scheme. You will be aware that in past years the lighting was installed by laying down large concrete blocks on the High Street fitted with poles to mount the Christmas lamppost type decorations. Last years committee quickly formed a view that this was no longer sustainable due to the cost of street closures and labour and equipment costs. We have been working behind the scenes with assistance from City of Edinburgh Council officials to bring forward fresh ideas and we now have an indicative proposal that we would like to share with you. You are invited to attend a public consultation session in the Rosebery Hall old court room being held on Saturday 5th September from 10am – 1pm or on Thursday 10th September from 6 – 9 pm. The Christmas in Queensferry committee looks forward to meeting you and discussing these proposals. Should you be unable to attend either of the consultations then please have a look at our website as we would be pleased receive your comments. Kind regards, Christmas in Queensferry Committee.

Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to you on behalf of the South Queensferry and district branch of Enable Scotland. Enable had a charity shop which provided financial help for children with special needs in the South Queensferry district. Unfortunately the Charity shop has now closed and as parents and carers, we are now having to find financial help in other ways. Enable was set up to help our children and future children in the South Queensferry district. This is the reason we are asking for your help. We have planned an Easter Fair on Saturday 11th of April 2009. We would be ever so grateful if you could donate something towards our Fair, We are having a raffle, tombola etc and fun things planned for the children and we hope it will be a success. Your donation would mean so much to us as this is the first time we have tried this for our children. If you are able to donate or require more information, please contact me as soon as possible. Thank you for taking time to read our letter. Kind regards, Linda Drysdale Committee member Mob: 07950887574 Email: Linda

Considering it was the schools holiday week we had a fair turn out to the offices of the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce on the 22nd. ECC staff described the various kinds of events they arrange (60 in 2008/9) to which QBA members are welcome. We heard about ECC's championing of small businesses whose sales are impacted by the trams upheaval in the city. This sort of voice is just what we need when we suffer from Council contract at the Promenade or High Street, or the Transport Scotland impact on our area when the new Bridge and roads construction starts to the west of Queensferry. QBA membership is now even better value to local businesses who can tap into much of the ECC events and services. We have our AGM in about a months time so look out for the notice and plan to come along. And if you are not a member of the QBA then plan to come along and join on the night.
Christmas in Queensferry are having a market again this year and would like to offer all QBA members an early opportunity to book a stall. For deatils please contact Ian Harrower. Details still to be confirmed.(eg. licences etc) Stall hire approx rate £35 still to be confirmed.

The following information came from Laura Sexton Please see the attached web link to the BIDS Scotland web site As you can see, both Bathgate and Inverness voted overwhelmingly in favour of BIDS on 14 March. Please follow the web site link for information on BIDs and how to take forward a BID in this area. I also spoke to Ian Davison Porter last week after last week's meeting and he would be happy to come and talk to the QBA about developing a BID in Queensferry/Dalmeny area. He also confirmed that there is nothing to prevent a Queensferry BID area forming a partnership with a neighbouring BID such as Linlithgow or Boness to fund projects such as the proposed bus. The BID area itself can't span two or more local authority areas but BID boards can go into partnership with their neighbouring BIDs either in their own area or outwith their area. Ian Davison Porter can be contacted as follows: Ian Davison Porter, Project Director Business Improvement Districts Scotland Scottish Government Area 3J Victoria Quay, Edinburgh EH6 6QQ Telephone 0131 244 4075 email: Turning now to rates, you can obtain information on business rates from the Scottish Government non domestic rates section by accessing the following link. A series of public information exhibitions are taking place from 20 August to 31 August 2007. See Exhibitions It is important that people in Queensferry visit these public exhibitions and make known their strong opposition to a new bridge from Linn Mill, just to the west of Port Edgar overshadowing it and perhaps stopping the Marina renewal. The people of Queensferry have expressed their strong preference for a submerged tube tunnel crossing, with road and rail links, just east of Philpstoun. West Lothian Council are also in favour of the STT at Philpstoun, and there is a majority in Fife who also prefer this route. Yet the quango, Transport Scotland, has to date produced an unprofessional bias toward a bridge - a solution that would dominate and dwarf the existing bridges, clutter the Forth and add to the existing problems of traffic, noise and pollution to Queensferry. The bridge solution is costlier to build, would take longer to construct and cost more in its lifetime than a tunnel near Philpstoun with a direct link between the M9 and the Rosyth by-pass. A meeting in Dunfermline earlier this year with professional presentations of the two options showed that ten to one favoured the upstream tunnel. This Quango has to listen - see visit the exhibitions and make your voice heard. By the way - two biased arguements that may be given to you - 1. Tunnel costs more - Nonsense! The Quango has costed a bored tunnel much longer than the submerged tube type at Philpstoun. 2. Environmental issues - Smokescreen! Nearly all of the Forth estuary has environmental issues, including the bridge site. Anyway, the human environmental issue is the most important and that affects 10,000 people around Queensferry with more traffic noise and pollution. For further information visit: http://www.forthreplacementcrossing.info/
Queensferry Business Association has launched an ambitious project to protect and secure future development plans for South Queensferry.
With so many community, business expansion, and development plans rapidly unfolding across Queensferry, concerns were raised by QBA members about lack of cohesion and co-ordination of projects. There were fears parts of the town would be missed out in development plans and concerns that lucrative grants and council cash could be wasted with projects overlapping or failing to co-ordinate, and some works having to be re-addressed. In an innovative move to champion a co-ordinated approach, the QBA met with and gained the support of Councillor George Grubb, the town's community council and Edinburgh City Council's planning officials. They also secured the services of experienced project managers Goddard & Socha to form and co-ordinate a town-wide stakeholder group and an executive decision making body which will manage a team of respected design and transportation professionals to define a long term vision in the form of a design framework for the town. Goddard and Socha previously worked on a design framework for Kirkcaldy in Fife. Joanna Goddard said: "Kirkcaldy was a success due to a structured communication process and full stakeholder representation. That means everyone — residents, investors, council officials and developers — all sitting at the same table." For further information and to register for regular updates on "Queensferry Ambition" please visit: www.goddardandsocha.com/queensferry.htm
Orocco Pier have received a lot of support from the Queensferry Business Association, community council and groups like the members of the local boat club for further expansion of their building. Now, planning permission has finally been approved for the next stage of development. An extension is to be built which will not only increase the number of bedrooms, but will also double the function hall and restaurant and introduce new office space and kitchens. They will now move to the next stage and obtain the Building Warrants.
The QBA will continue to support this exciting new development!
The QBA Committee has given its full support to a thorough exploration of a tunnel option for a future Forth crossing, as presented by Engineer John Carson to some members of the QDCC and QBA earlier in the year. The Committee has expressed a unanimous opinion that a third bridge at Queensferry would not be a good thing for the town on many levels. FETA and the Scottish Executive are being strongly urged to consider the tunnel option seriously, and the QBA is considering contributing to a lobby group to support the tunnel. The land forming the Site of Ferry Glen was acquired by the city council in 2003 when it was purchased from Lord Rosebery.
Restoration work was carried out in 2006 including the creation of new paths,
the building of two new bridges and a boardwalk alongside the burn behind St Margaret's School.
The trees of the woodland were thinned and a degree of enrichment planting took place.
The improvements have been universally welcomed and the end result has been the creation of a spectacular and welcoming green space in the heart of Queensferry,
to be enjoyed by local people and increasingly by visitors to the town.
New steel signposts will shortly be erected at the entrances to the area giving directions to and from the town.
Future Plans:

Thereafter there will be plenty of time to exchange ideas with fellow members over drinks in the bar. So come along and brings lots of business cards!
QHS becomes a ‘School of Ambition’THE Scottish Executive has handed Queensferry High School a major boost after it succeeded in its attempt to become a "School of Ambition".The local secondary is one of 21 schools across Scotland to gain such status and is poised to receive £100,000 in additional funding each year for the next three years. Head teacher Robert Birch and his management team were overjoyed this week after their bid proved successful. "Queensferry High is committed to becoming a School of Ambition through developing leadership for staff and pupils at all levels. Through distributed leadership we will aim to transform the schools ethos and culture, promote and celebrate excellence, and encourage a greater sense of ownership." The head teacher described Queensferry High as "a great school with a huge potential" -- and said the award would help to open up more opportunities for the children. The main focus of the school's Ambition award will be to develop leadership skills and enhance the school's reputation and standing within the community. For further information on Schools of Ambition visit: http://www.scotland.gov.uk/News/Releases/2005/02/23100017 For news of developments at the high school visit their website: http://www.queensferryhs.ik.org/ QHS and Jubilee FMIn terms of increased links with the community, Mr Birch highlighted the recent venture with Queensferry's local radio station, Jubilee FM. The station is soon to be based within the school and pupils will be involved in the programmes, gaining broadcast and media skills.
Thursday 26 April 2007 7.15pm Now in its 6th year the Christmas Pageant’s popularity has increased far beyond the QBA’s original expectations, so much so that it is now necessary to form a separate Pageant committee. Originally a Queensferry Rotary Club initiative responsible for the installation of 6 Christmas Lights, the Queensferry Business Association agreed to take the project to the next level, establishing what is now known as Queensferry Christmas Pageant & Light Switch On. The largest Pageant outside Edinburgh City Centre Introducing a small Market to the Pageant in 2006, which turned out to be a huge success we intend to build on in future years, bring another new dimension to the Pageant. Now an important part of the Queensferry annual calendar we extend an invitation to all Queensferry community groups / organisations & interested residents to send along a member of their respective groups to a meeting in the Rosebery Hall on Thursday 26 April 2007 a follow up meeting to the 2006 Pageant debriefing, which took place on Monday 5 Feb07. This meeting is the way forward, to establish a small committee to deal with the main organisation, administration & marketing details of the Pageant. We also require individuals to concentrate on various aspects of the night in question. We are looking for fresh, exciting and stimulating ideas from all areas of the community, whether it is from an individual, any one of the existing Charity participants, PTA’s, Environmental group’s, children’s organisations & art groups.
The Queensferry Christmas Pageant, Market & Light Switch On is now a Queensferry Community initiative opened to all members of the community.
We look forward to meeting you in the Rosebery Hall

John Carson has been invited to give a presentation on the alternative proposal for a tunnel which most of you will be familiar with. I do hope you have seen the media coverage on a tunnel crossing in the lead up to Christmas. Questions can then be asked by attendees and key points and views will be discussed. I do hope you can attend as I feel it is important that there is good representation at the meeting from Queensferry residents. If any of your friends, neighbours, and work colleagues wishes to attend then please let them know about the meeting. Prior to the meeting I would encourage you to visit the website – www.ForthTag.co.uk FEDERATION OF SMALL BUSINESSES - FIFE BRANCH
